Cascade Of Mares

Why have I never written about Cascade of Mares? The painting is simple: Three Arabian mares of different colors scamper vertically down the canvas. The background is only abstract color. It’s hard to say exactly where the inspiration for this painting came from. Certainly, part of the idea was exploring the different colors of the horses; rich brown-bay, coppery chestnut, and golden dun-bay. Another part was the opportunity to experiment with the different, frolicsome poses from an unusual angle. Above all I think the spirit of the painting comes from the descriptions of the Arabian horse in Marguerite Henry’s Album of Horses. Something about the way she described the small, delicate mares scampering alongside the Bedouin caravans has been stuck in the back of my mind for years, long before I had Arabian horses of my own.
